Sir Richard F. Burton Explorer ANS 2pp 4 x 5 in. n.d. place unreadable. The tiny scrawl indicates he was on the S.S. Senegal off Grand (unreadable). The only date given is Jan. 24 no year but the Senegal wrecked in Feb. 1887 so it can't be later than that. Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was a British geographer anthropologist explorer soldier linguist poet diplomat and more. He reportedly spoke 29 languages and was especially fluent in Middle Eastern languages having traveled to Mecca in disguise supposedly being fluent enough to avoid detection (at least by language; he reported that he was discovered by one youngster when he hastily urinated one night while standing rather than squatting in the Arab manner). There is a small Arabic note in the upper left corner. Condition: Excellent.
